As the crisp air settles and we swap our sandals for boots, it’s not just our wardrobes that need an update.
The transition from the dry summer heat to the cooler, winter months can take a toll on your hands and feet.
A change in season can lead to brittle nails and dry cuticles.
To save your nails from the winter chill and help keep them looking nourished in between nail appointments follow these tips.

To keep your nails strong, flexible, and looking flawless all season long, here are my top 5 professional tips for winter nail care.
1. Rehydrate with Cuticle Oil
The winter wind acts like a sponge, soaking up the natural moisture from your skin and nails.
This is the most important time of year to be diligent with your cuticle oil.
My Professional Tip: Apply a drop of high-quality cuticle oil to the base of your nails twice a day and massage it in.
The oil will penetrate deep into the nail plate (even through Shellac and Acrylic) to keep the natural nail underneath flexible.
This crucial hydration prevents the “brittleness” that leads to painful cracks, chips, and product lifting.
2. Gloves are Your Best Friend
As it gets colder, we tend to use much hotter water for washing hands, doing dishes, and cleaning.
This constant exposure to extreme temperature changes causes your natural nails to expand and contract rapidly, which can weaken the bond of your professional polish or nail enhancement.
My Professional Tip: Wear rubber gloves for all household chores and cleaning.
Not only does this protect your investment and extend the life of your manicure, but it also keeps your skin from becoming completely “parched” and stripped by harsh detergents.
3. Mind the “Boot Season” Transition
We’re finally putting our toes away for the season!
While it’s tempting to completely forget about our pedicures once they are hidden inside thick socks and boots, tight footwear actually increases pressure on your feet.
My Professional Tip: Keep your toenails trimmed to a sensible, manageable length to avoid “shoe-strike” (when the nail continuously impacts the front of your boot).
This repetitive pressure can cause painful bruising, micro-trauma, or even lift the nail from the nail bed.
Maintaining regular professional Pedicures every 6-8 weeks ensures your toes stay tidy, safe, and deeply hydrated, even when they aren’t on display.
4. Don’t Be a “Picker”
With the air getting drier, you might start noticing small, annoying “hangnails” or dry skin flaking around your nail walls.
The temptation to pick can be strong, but resist the urge!
My Professional Tip: Never pick, bite, or pull at dry skin or slightly lifting polish.
Doing so peels away the delicate top layers of your natural nail, leaving them weak and thin.
Instead, keep a small, fine-grit nail file or a dedicated cuticle oil roller in your handbag.
Gently smooth any rough snags or hydrate the dry spot immediately until you can get in for a professional Manicure.
5. Embrace the Winter Palette
Winter is the perfect time to switch up your look and embrace deep, moody tones and warm neutrals.
Think rich, velvety chocolate browns, deep plums, classic navy, and elegant red-wine hues.
My Professional Tip: Wearing darker, richer shades looks absolutely stunning, but they contain highly concentrated pigments, which increases the risk of colour transfer.
To enjoy these shades without any staining, they require a high-quality professional base coat to act as a barrier and prevent staining of the natural/acrylic nail.
It’s the perfect excuse to leave the polish application to the professionals and keep your nails looking pristine!
By adding a few self-care steps at home will make a massive difference in how your hands look and feel this season. But remember, you don’t have to navigate the winter chill alone!
A regular professional nail service is the best way to prevent damage, treat stubborn dry skin, and give your hands and feet the care they crave.
