We’ve all been there, living with overflowing drawers, a cluttered vanity, the sheer panic of not being able to find your favourite lipstick.

If your makeup and skincare collection is starting to resemble a beauty bomb site, it’s time for a decluttering intervention!

Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With a little strategy and a dash of ruthless honesty, you can transform your beauty chaos into a serene, organized sanctuary.

Let’s dive into some practical tips:

1. The Big Purge: Assess and Categorise

Empty Everything: Start by pulling out every single item. Yes, even those dusty palettes lurking in the back.

Categorize: Group similar items together: lip products, eye products, foundations, cleansers, serums, etc. This helps you visualize just how much you own.

The Three-Pile Method: Create three piles:

Keep: Items you love, use regularly, and are still in good condition.

 Maybe: Items you’re unsure about.

Toss: Expired, broken, or simply unwanted products.

2. The Expiration Date Reality Check

Know Your Products: Many beauty products have expiration dates, even if they aren’t explicitly printed.

Look for a small open jar symbol with a number followed by “M” (months).

Signs of Expiration: Watch for changes in texture, smell, or colour. Mascara, for example, should be replaced every 3-6 months.

When in Doubt, Toss It Out: Expired products can harbor bacteria and cause skin irritations or infections.

3. The “Maybe” Pile: The Deciding Factors

Do You Really Use It? Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t touched it in six months, chances are you won’t.

Does It Suit You? That trendy shade might have looked amazing on the influencer, but does it flatter your skin tone?

Is It a Dupe? If you have multiple similar products, keep your favourite and ditch the rest.

The “One Week Trial”: If you are really on the fence, try using the item for a full week.

If you don’t love it, let it go.

4. Organization is Key

Invest in Storage Solutions: Makeup organizers, drawer dividers, and clear containers can make a world of difference.

Vertical Storage: Utilise vertical space with tiered organizers or wall-mounted shelves.

Label Everything: Labelling drawers and containers will help you find what you need quickly.

Daily Essentials Front and Center: Keep your most frequently used products within easy reach.

5. Skincare Specific Tips

Simplify Your Routine: Do you really need a 10-step skincare routine?

Streamline your regimen to focus on essential steps.

Consider Your Skin Type: Tailor your skincare products to your specific needs.

Sample before committing: Before investing in a full-size product, try a sample or travel size.

Hygiene is crucial: Clean your brushes and applicators regularly to prevent bacteria build-up.

6. Maintenance is Essential

Regular mini-declutters: Don’t let clutter accumulate again.

Do a quick declutter every month or two.

Replenish mindfully: Before buying a new product, consider if you truly need it.

Embrace minimalism: Less is often more when it comes to beauty.

Decluttering your makeup and skincare collection is more than just organising; it’s about creating a space that brings you joy and simplifies your daily routine.

By following these tips, you can transform your beauty chaos into a calm and organized haven. Happy decluttering!
